Singapore Blogger

Story Behind Mookata

There was a period of time when the Mookata craze hit Singapore, many of us were thrilled to try  this delicious creation but how many of us know the story behind Mookata and what exactly is the correct way of eating it?

In my video you will learn some tips on how to achieve that perfect meat you always wanted, coat some pork lard before you start your barbecue and you will be surprised with the difference. We ordered Tom Yum and vegetable-based soup individually, it is the best choice when eating Mookata because you can taste the spicy and non-spicy, both are distinctively good. Tom Yum was slightly spicy yet very appetising, the vegetable soup is infused with various spices added from the juice of the meat that flows down from the top giving an extra oomph to the flavour.

Talking about how Mookata came about, it is quite an interesting story actually. In the olden days during war time, the starving soldiers from Chiang Mai Thailand would replenish their energy by eating the meat they hunt but they had no apparatus to cook. Fortunately there was one smart soldier who suggested to use his helmet to cook and this cooking method actually works which was then widely accepted and improvised till the Mookata today. I bet you will have more ‘feel’ after understanding the concept of Mookata, Charcoal Thai is one of the places that I would recommend for an authentic eating experience like a Thai.

More than 30 crab flavours you can feast in Singapore

If you like crabs, you are bound to like Crab Party. I was impressed when I found out that over here there are more than 30 crab flavours to choose from! We did not have enough stomach space to try all of them so we were asked to picked those that we think are worth recommending. Some flavours are so creative that it was out of my expectation.

Eventually we chose 10 exclusive flavours and played a guessing game, watch the video to find out what’s the taste of each and who is the one who played cheat most!

Of course other than crabs they have some delectable dishes as well such as the BBQ Sotong. The sotong is luscious, tender and juicy, these three words can’t fully describe how good it is.  Grilled impeccably, the fragrance actually remains in my mouth for quite long. Truly satisfying and to my liking.

Singapore Blogger # What is Omakase ?

Have you ever heard of Omakase? It is a Japanese word that means a meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef. For those of you who have never tried Omakase before, you should take a look at my video to understand what exactly it is.

Today I trusted my meal again at the fine-dining restaurant called Takumi, a frequent place that I patronise. As usual with chef Kenji hosting the kitchen, I was seated at the counter excitedly waiting for my food while he displayed his culinary skills professionally. Using only the season’s freshest ingredients, the chef has the freedom to create the dishes by his own creativity. To me every dish is an unexpected surprise, that is what I like about Omakase. You will never be able to taste the same dish at other restaurants.

I often choose to dine in at a small or medium scale restaurant if I were to let the chef decide what I eat. Reason being most of them have brought in the freshest seafood and seasonal vegetable produce, the omakase dining experience will definitely be a memorable one. I enjoyed every bit of Takumi Restaurant not just the food but the beautiful scenery facing the sea.

Japanese and local fare in one

In Singapore there are various types of Japanese restaurants which you can enjoy. Some are authentic, some are traditional with a twist of local taste. Shinagawa Ramen is one of those that I find it interesting as it has a fair influence of the local flavours.

The Spider Maki is always served hot especially the ingredients inside, that means it’s made only when you order. Fried till golden brown, the soft shell crab is crispy and fragrant.

Singapore Blogger

Because of our game, we added extra spicy to this Tom Yum Ramen but you can choose a different level of spiciness according to your preference. The broth has a light lemongrass and rich seafood fragrance, it is a unique Japanese version of Tom yum which you can only enjoy here

Singapore Blogger

Eating Dynamic Roll is like eating a mouthful of premium ingredients, the mouth-watering salmon on the roll is served generously. It is actually similar to what I ate in Japan, the salmon covers the roll entirely that makes it so tasty!

Singapore Blogger

It’s my practice to order salad before any main course. The ideal mixture of salad depends on the type of vegetables and freshness. The chef uses avocado as a secondary ingredient is a clever mixture, it creates a different texture that refreshes my appetite.

Singapore Blogger

For ramen, you can add as much noodles as you want in Japan but not the broth, it is because most of the broth is boiled using quality ingredients. At Shinagawa, the ingredients used are also exceptional. The broth is superb with a generous amount of ‘cha siew’ added, that explains why this is a signature dish.

Fashion in Japan

To pursue the latest fashion trend has always been one of my interest. Every year I will travel to look out for the season’s newest clothing designs. A few months back I went to Japan for a fashion hunt and food trip.

Japan’s designs are unique on it’s own, the colors are often in light pastel which are not too loud. One of the reasons why I bought so many clothes is because I was invited to quite a number of Japan restaurants to do video filming, thus I have to match the theme of the place. It is important to take in consideration of the restaurant’s setting, food and color concept before I choose my attire.

What I like about buying clothes from other countries is the fact that the possibility of knocking into another person wearing the same design is very minimal. I always wear differently for each video shooting because every video is special and I respect my crew members who have placed their trust in me.

These are bought from Shibuya at a small shop. Shibuya district is a shopping heaven for all guys and girls who are looking for something chic and casual, this is it.

Similar design but a different color makes a difference. Red goes perfectly with The Pipe District, a young and vibrant bistro.

One of my favourite designs are from GU. Pronounced as “jee-you”, it is a a Japanese word for “freedom” under a concept of “more freedom with fashion”. Do not worry about whether the clothes there are suitable for your age as they offer timeless designs which caters to a broader customer base. You can expect more fun and practical designs that can be worn easily.

I chose to wear blazer at only special occasions and this video shoot at Ah Yat Abalone is one of them. My first time cooking an abalone.
