Reasons behind taking up a marathon

Everytime when there is a marathon I would ask myself why did I sign up for it? There is actually many reasons behind. When I knew about this run that will be held in April, I did not hesitate but registered for it immediately, that was about 3 to 4 months in advance. While waiting for that day to arrive, I will push myself to train and get prepared for this marathon. It is a target that I have set for myself.
Signing up for the 21km half-marathon 4 times per year has already been a practice to maintain my fitness, as well as a full marathon at the end of the year. Recalling the past few years when I just started bring back good memories. I remembered the first time I participated in the full marathon, my leg muscles felt sore and I could not continue at 38km. While I was resting, I noticed a guy was waiting for me, till today I still remember his face vividly. I pulled myself up again and he started pacing me. To my best effort, I completed 39km but my legs could not carry me any further, so I began to walk. He turned back to look at me and gave a warm smile, at that moment I felt really touched.
I enjoy taking challenges, the feeling of racing with more than 20,000 people is incredible. Although we are all running together as strangers but all of us have the same objective, which is to complete the race. When I slowed down my pace half way, I observed a few of them pushing themselves hard to continue, some of them would give each other encouragement, it was quite motivating to see such great spirit amongst them.
Only during such race when I cover almost half of Singapore is the time when I can relax my mind and enjoy the beautiful scenery while running. It is not often to have this opportunity to travel across the island like this, thus I cherish it well.
Some people might think it is too expensive to pay just to run, but I think it is worth it because I  have always wanted to run on highways, tunnels and places in Singapore which we are not allowed to run on normal days. Of course I wouldn’t want to miss this golden chance to experience!   That explains why I don’t feel strenuous when running 21km, I can even pace other runners. At many times I realised many of them felt tired at the last 2km, I slowed down my pace as I am no longer competing with time and started to pace with one guy who seemed almost drained out. Just like how the other runner encouraged me previously during my first full marathon, I passed on a similar encouragement to him till the last 500m. Before the finish line, I smiled and waved and continued with my own pace. It was a mutual feeling that we have as runners, as long as we tried our best for each run is good enough, the satisfaction is irreplaceable.

  5. Now day people just go to gym to 'run' and get fit. I think if we all join this kind of event, maybe our mind will change the way it works. I mean like you have to motivate yourself to finish right.. so you'll get extra benefit loh. Strong mind + strong body..agree?
